You've two maps - world and local - local maps can be improved to show
doors (claims to be "show machines") and enemies and other things -
you'll find a map terminal when you leave the island.

The world map by default is not wonderful. You can install player
generated ones

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that. The PlayField map (PF map) does not work
well on newb isle, and occasionally for no apparent reason won't work in town
either, being all dark and undistinguishable, then suddenly it gets brighter
and you can see things again.
As Kevin said, you can buy 'improvements' for it, very useful improvements, but
ferchrissakes do NOT put IP points into map-reading/navigation. The trick is to
equip those by temporarily equip map-reading-boosting implants later on. IP
points are much too valuable to waste on things line navigation and swimming
and vehicle-whatnot.

I usually crack around level 15 and spend a little on the "Machines" upgrade, and a bit later for "Monsters" - however the art is to use implants to temporarily get the right map navigation skills to install the maps, and then replace them with the implants you want for daily life. The reason for not over spending is that your navigation skills will go up from "trickle down" along with what implants you can use.

But that leads into "twinking" and that's a huge topic, and an important game skill for uberness. But one quick hint - once you get to basic shop, you can use any professions implants, and some of the other professions setups can be better than your theoretical prof. choice.

CSP map is a very good downloadable player-made Planet-map. In fact once you
have it, you no longer need the PF-map upgrades for all the different areas.
But the PF map upgrades that show enemies, people, machines and monsters etc
are invaluable later for missioning and dungeons.

-P.

AoRK is a descendant of CSP - either are much better than nothing.

Oh, and the map upgrades are for the local map and they are in-game features. Talking of which Funcom don't recommend third party products be installed, partially because there have been tales of rogue ones, and partially because some are "cheating". That said, they sort of encourage the use of certain third-party items, and plugin maps is one such.
