Daymn, I found my old client CDs (back from Dec 2004, v15.7.3) & thought I'd
install it & go down the patch path rather than re-dling a Gb all over
again. Even my account online seems intact.
However, after installing the older client, when the Patch button appears &
I press it I keep getting:

The Dimension you want to play on is down at the moment, Please try to
connect later.

Been like that for hours. Any ideas? Should I just bite the bullet & get the
latest client? Do I have to re-activate my account somehow perhaps? Is an
old login server non-existant now? Btw, Nostrum is still the only free
content, correct?

There's been a lot of changes since 2004! There have been some server
woes recently, but I'd kinda expect it to all work, for all that.
However, the last time I patched from an old setup it was not being very
clever about incremental backups - though that was a while ago.

Double damn. So I d/l all *64* incremental patches from my v15.7.3 to the
latest v17.5.3 (423Mb I might add!). I run the first one
AOPatch_v15.7.3-v15.8.0.exe & it asks for the install directory, after which
it all just hangs like a bad fart in a ski cable car. :-/
It's all starting to come back to me now...the sheer pantness of this
game...*grumble*

If you just want the free content download the "small" client and patch
from there - but it's going to be a painful long download.

Which is the 'small' client? On their website they gave me a torrent link
to: AOInstall17.1.1_EP0_live_nointro
And there's still the 165Mb of incrementals after that, which may or may not
install *sigh*.

I think you should have non-posting access

Oh, and its a moderately friendly game in that if you ask questions of
longer term players you are quite likely to get useful answers. Look for
those in organisations for best results. There are duff orgs, but
joining a good org will also be a help for questions. Just don't beg for
credits and stuff!

In spite of getting nowhere so far Kev, thanks heaps anyway for all the tips
& suggestions. Will come in handy I'm sure, should I ever get this mongrel
up & running again ;)
