Just a little note about CoX... I've been playing since almost the
beginning, and it's an off and on affair... As others have stated, it gets
a bit grindy, but it's not "uber gear" grindy, it's experience and leveling
grindy... The invention/crafting system seems to be a pretty good addition
to help give you alot more fine tuning of your powers, but I've seen even
new (to CoX) people commenting about how it just feels like it was slapped
on as an afterthought - which, of course, it was... But they had to do
something to keep the long timers interested and try to distract you from
the leveling grind.

| Guild Wars has started to sound good, because of the
| lack of a monthly fee. I always felt like I had to play
| WoW to get my money's worth instead of taking just
| a week off here and there. It also seems like it might
| have an actual story, and that even casual players can
| get to be the hero. The big fault of many online games
| is that you can never be the hero and "win" the game;
| only the hardcore players at the top can do that,
| the rest are just in a level grind to try and get a glimpse
| of end-game content before an expansion comes out
| that raises the bar again. Ie, in Wow I have no hope
| of ever seeing the inside of the major dungeon. I'm
| glad just to be considered mediocre. But if GW lets me
| finish a plot at my own pace without grinding for uber
| gear or having to suck up to get in an end-game guild,
| that's a big plus.
| I am a bit worried because I see reviews that compare
| skills and combat to both magic the gathering and
| diablo 2; which just happen to be the top two games on
| my least-likely-to-ever-play list.

GW is alot of fun for a casual gamer who tends to solo alot... It's one of
those games that is loaded on my desktop and laptop, and I'll just pop in at
weird times when I feel like it, and don't really feel like I'm grinding.
As others have stated, I'm not so sure it merits the "RPG" moniker, but if
nothing else it's a hybrid - the difference is you can stack up your skills
and attributes dynamically, which allows you to tailor your character for
the particular situation. In my view, a true RPG has you making skill and
attribute choices that are more set in stone, once you make them you have to
live with the consequences and flourish or suffer accordingly. I heard
somebody once call GW "RPG Lite" and that seems to fit pretty well, as it
seems tailor made for casual gaming... Just keep in mind, you don't HAVE to
re-roll all your stats and skills each time you head out, you can make your
choices and live with them - it's your choice. And with each new title in
the GW line, as well as the first true expansion just out, there's alot of
world and quests to keep you occupied.

| What other online games are there that might be good?
|

I just picked up a PC Gamer mag while traveling this week, and it had the
"Sword of the new world" game in it... It's an online game that is free to
play until you hit the level cap, then you can choose to pay and subscribe
to it, so I'm going to check it out... It has a very Japanese/Korean RPGish
feel to it upon starting out. Not sure what kind of RPG element is in
there, the combat seems a bit weird and is based on "stances" and skills.
Anyhow, might be worth a look, being free to try out and see if it catches
your interest and all that.

I'm even thinking about trying out Jumpgate, just to see where they went
with that title and how it stacks up against Eve... I hadn't realized it
survived and still had a player base, here I was waiting patiently for
Jumpgate Evolution to finally show up. Ah well.
