We won eventually, got virtually no loot (except what we took from our

me verus them is stupid, of course they can kill the players off, but can
they keep us coming back?

Our group had a DM like that in our early 20s. He was great for setting
atmosphere & the mood/scene, but a prick of a man. This kind of DMing is
pretty much a symptom of a control freak (or worse) - ask him to play
instead of DM the next adventure/module & see how he responds :).

The problem with this one is that he isn't even good at setting the
atmosphere and mood, there is no such thing as quest hooks or plot hooks. It
is a truly open world, we go where we want, there is a central plot, but
it's very loosely defined. That may sound great, but can be pretty tedious,
especially if the players are tired and not feeling creative. It's ironic as
well to note that all actions we've taken towards resolving the central plot
have been thwarted in completely idiotic ways. I.e. an "enlarged" imp,
masquerading as one of our horses spying on us, and subverting all of our
plans as a result. Yeah, cute, imaginative, way to leave us feeling as if
we've accomplished NOTHING over the last 2 months :p We couldn't even kill
the damn thing once we realised it as it had both MR and was damage
resistant, 10/+2 or something. And as we don't have a single magical weapon
amongst us (after 2 months of playing mind you... we got lots of potions and
scrolls though... way to go random treasure generation) we couldn't even get
revenge.

But your conclusion in saying that it's a symptom of a control freak is dead
on, that's exactly what he is. As for making him play... well, put it this
way. In the few Vampire the Masquerade campaigns we've all played (its such
a better system!) his characters have all ended up somehow dead... usually
by my hand, or indirectly by me. I generally got a pat on the back from the
other players when it happens. He has the decency to admit that his
character was asking for it each time at least. :)

It's a pity I was his best man at his wedding and that he is such a close
mate, I'd have told him to f'off a long time ago. :)
