You would be utterly amazed at how much easier it makes page navigation.
I use rclick-swipe left or right to go backward or forwards, plus put
cursor over link & rclick/swipe downwards to open link in new tab
(*much* easier & quicker than rclick->click open link in new tab).
Remember, there was mouse gesture software before there was a mouse
wheel all those years ago. Sure, I could configure my MX1000 to do
some/most of that, but why bother? FF gives you a plugin with all of
that & so much more - check it out here:
http://optimoz.mozdev.org/gestures/index.html
You can create mgests to close tabs, open all links in new tabs, etc,
etc, etc. Once you get used it you'll never go back - it's like going
back to a mouse without a wheel, honestly ;)
Perhaps, but since I never open things in another tab ever...
I have for years done the open in new window thing, not tabs.
Why? because navigation between windows works without a mouse at all.
I always use alt-tab. But regardless, I got sick of IE's pop-ups & adware
crap years ago, so switched to tabbed browsing. Never looked back. You can
set Opera/FF to refresh pages every so often (which is not an issue with
broadband), so I have tv, weather, road reports & a number of other sites
(usually 10-12) always open, or I can refresh them manually with a simple
F5, so there's no need to reload the thing from scratch. Far more convenient
imo, but appreciate that with you being a dial-up user it's a different
story.
Never really used IE.
I looked at it when it came out, but since it was a serious latecomer,
and had weird priorities I never took to it.
The fact that it was later shown to be full of exploits just confirmed
my gut response that it was crap.
Since my mouse is already set up with page up and page down macroed to
buttons 4 and 5 I don't actually use the scroll wheel all that much.
And that macroing means those buttons are available in old games that
can't deal with mouse3+ buttons.
I don't like using the buttons for std windowsy stuff - I usually map the my
Logitech to key strokes for better gaming. Used is as a remote
pause/back/fwd for VLC for a while until I got my DivX player recently :). I
know there's meant to be a way to customise the buttons per
application/game, but I've just never gotten around to it *sigh*.
I just found it came naturally when going through a document, scroll
wheel for small increments and pageup/pagedown for larger ones.
The version of mouseware I use doesn't do keystrokes.
I tried the keystroke one but since the keystrokes didn't work at all in
the games I tried it with, I went back to the version I'd been using
before which has been rock solid.
I prefer to keep a fairly standard interface across applications, so
gestures which only work in one app/game aren't particularly attractive
- just as Arx Fatalis' spell casting thing wasn't something I ever
wanted to see again.
He, he, browsing is a _huge_ part of anyone's activities on a PC (when not
gaming or reading mail/news ;), so I've decided it's worth the trouble.
Anyway, other apps don't do "open new tab", or "back/fwd page" so why would
it be an issue? :-/
I started "browsing" with some very early version of netscape, so the
gestures are just some new feature that I don't really feel any need
for.
Don't much feel like retraining all those muscle memory routines.
Never been on the "it's newer therefore it's better" bandwagon or the
"always upgrade as soon as possible" bandwagon, and that's saved me a
lot of hassles over the years.
This is a plugin, so nothing to do with being 'newer' - it's optional
I'd say because most ppl stil don't know how to use the std mouse
potential in windows, much less give them advanced features like this
lol! You, as a power-user should find it very handy imo ;).
Well you did list it as being the reason you were using a later version
of firefox than I was.
Incidental - I just auto-upgrade as I go. I think it was available pre v2
anyway.
The only "must have" extensions i've found were adblock and flashblock,
with an honorable mention for the video downloader.
Oooh - must look them up, though I find FF's std blocker pretty good to be
honest (compared to IE's usual desktop ass-raping efforts >;-).
Well I wouldn't compare IE to anything else in a contest for usefulness.
The flash and adblockers are nice, as is the rather large HOSTS file I
use these days which has most ad sites remapped to 127.0.0.1 - makes
browsing so much faster when you don't have to wait for the page to
connect to 16 other sites for ads and pictures.
The flash blocker works well in conjunction with the video downloader
for sites like youtube since it won't bother even trying to get the vid
normally.
