Did you get a download package you can re-install without connecting to
Steam? I had to manually update my v1.4.03 to a v 2.0.02 to remove the
Starfilth crap.
Erm - steam installed the game in a subdirectory of steam, and it gave me a
shortcut that fires up steam (which tries to log in to home, even though you
can configure it to 'offline mode' I noted that it still tries the net) which
then fires up x3.
HOWEVER - I rooted around a bit and found the (4.3 gig) subdirectory with an
x3.exe in it. I can fire that up directly and steam isn't invoked. I expect
that, if I move that directory and delete steam, the game will still run - so I
should be able to either burn it directly to dvd or else zip it up and store it
in a safe place. Which I will do one day soon, just to be safe.
I _think_ I can re-download the game from steam with my account login if I need
to. But I'll back it up, just to be sure.
I got partway into the 3rd mission as a newb, bumped into said asteroid and did
other stupid things and decided to spend a couple of hours reading ... mostly
'heard' that you should go to free play, do mapping, and gather resources and
skill before going through with the missions past 1 or 2. Which is what I did,
with good results. I can competently dogfight a Buster or Harrier by now, and
I've quadrupled my seed money of 100k and acquired a second freighter (for
free).
Those freighters are doing a good job of raising my reputation with the other
races.
It beats the pants off Elite, i.m.o. <grin> (I have logged hundreds of hours in
Elite, b.t.w. - loved it and still love it as a 'classic' - but that love's
entirely platonic by now!).
cheers, -P.
