ping Nostromo -- X3


Hey!
Thanks, that was a good tip about X3. Having discarded X2 after the demo
totally put me off, I would've never picked this up by myself. I went and
bought it off Steam (US$ 19.95) latest version with all the patches and no
Starforce worries rather than going for a boxed version (1.4 at twice the
price) and found I can just play the game and bypass Steam alltogether. All I
had to do was find the .exe file and create a shortcut. ;-)

Very steep learning curve, as you pointed out. First (and only) time I
captured a ship I got stuck in the menus, couldn't find how to re-board and
smacked into something because you can't kill your speed while you have the
damn menus open. THE END. Heh. Flying into an asteroid during a dogfight is
also not recommended: THE END. Well, I am getting on a bit better by now ...
(that was 3 days ago).
First and only time a pirate dropped cargo and I picked it up I got scanned and
a rap over the knuckles by the cops. Lost a whole rank in reputation. How was I
supposed to know that 'spaceflies' are something illegal -- I thought it was a
food item for some kind of froggy bug eyed monster. <sigh> That was yesterday.
Well I have a save file <g>. But there are a lot of writeups about X3 on
various fansites, fortunately. The ingame docs and the no-tutorial are ... erm.
Not inclined to print out a 96 page pdf.

My 2 Mhz Barton can't keep up at 1280x1024x32. Had to lower resolution to
1024x768 - but it still looks gorgeous, even on an lcd monitor. I can see that
I will spend a fair few hours with this. Would be nice to be able to play with
other ppl without the asshattery one encounters in ..... (you know) but as
things are I take it as the better option.
