In answer to my own question (the game came today), the only one that
runs out of the box in WinXP is M&M VI. Looks like it's DosBox time.

M&M VII can have problems in full screen mode for the videos. Try
switching
to windowed when there is a video and go back to full screen afterwards.

I've got the M&M Platinum Edition (6,7,8,9) 6.7 and 8 all run fine under
XP Home ( in Win 98
compatibility mode). 9 is buggy and I won't even play with it.

MM9 is buggy no matter how you try to run it... they released it that way.

I played it through though... I remember the most frustrating thing I had in
the game was I was at some town on the coast and was looking for a specific
NPC walking around town.

I searched seemingly FOREVER for this guy... checked online FAQs and even
posted to newgroups and forums for help. I finally did find him, turns out
he walked into the water and was walking around the ocean floor the whole
time.

I had very little trouble with M&M9. The only time I got stuck was when I went
mountain climbing, got into a valley and couldn't get out. I also managed to
fall into the "basement" of the starting area. I wasn't able to duplicate that
feat in any other area. It was a fun game for going where you weren't supposed
to go.
