Why is Oblivion crashing for you folks? Do you have stuff running in the
background? I must have about 250 game hours so far (130 the first time
through and nearly that again) and it's never crashed on me.
For me the game would run fine for hours & hours, but would crash on
exit half the time. Those crashes went away once I upgraded my
soundcard drivers to the latest version (Audigy 2 ZS).
I haven't upgraded my drivers since I installed my Audigy 2. I think it's
still on the drivers that came with it on the CD. Maybe more recent sound
drivers are what is causing people problems. I'm pretty aggressive about
keeping my video drivers updated but sound...not so much. :0
Be interesting to see if folks disabled their sound cards and played
Oblivion still got the same crashes.
On this advice, I turned down the audio sliders to the far left,
basically off in the game. I haven't had a crash since. 3.5 hours
with no crash, that's longer than I've gone previously, with 3 hours
being a record. I got bored in the middle of that and turned it back
on for a minute, but as soon as I did, oblivion started getting very
choppy, so I turned it back off.
I'm running nvidia audio from my motherboard, because I don't really
care about sound quality, but crashing is another thing, and no sound
at all is pretty booring. I'm 90% sure I updated the audio drivers,
but I'll do it again next chance I have. I don't need a super top of
the line sound card. If someone can name a cheap ass PCI card they've
got that isn't causing crashes I'll probably pick it up.
On the other hand I'm getting a bit tired of Oblivion anyway, so I
might just finish the main quest as a deaf character and go on to
something else.
One last update here. I updated my audio drivers to no effect. I was
crashing and burning even with the sound off really bad during the
fight outside the 3 gates, and inside the last gate - like about 50/50
when saving, zoning, or doing pretty much anything else, crashing about
every 5-10 minutes. I finally got past that, and am back to more
'normal' crashing for me of about ever 30 minutes. which went up again
during the last bit of fighting at the 'end' of the game. So it
definately wasn't the audio, it was just a fluke of 3 hours of no
crashing...
I've finished the main quest, and tied up all the loose ends I was
interested in, like the nirnoot quest (what is that, a grand total of
100 hand-picked nirnroot?!?!). I think I'm done. I can't quite bring
myself to play through again, even though I much prefer spellcasters
generally, and I was just playing a warrior so I'd have something more
to try.
What to try next?
