"jason.fliegel@xxxxxxxxx" <jason.fliegel@xxxxxxxxx> once tried to test me
with:
My specs are:
Pentium 4, 2.20 GHz
512 MB RAM
ATI Radeon 9200SE, 128 MB RAM
All of this sounds like a graphics card problem to me -- I'm up to
spec, but my card isn't listed as a supported card. The ATI Radeon
9500 series, 9600 series, 9700 series, and 9800 series are all
supported, but not the 9200 series.
So my questions are: 1) is this a graphics card problem, or could it be
something else; and 2) is there any way to fix it (e.g. new drivers)
apart from buying a new graphics card?
To be honest, your system isn't going to be up to running Oblivion even if
you get this bug fixed. You're going to have a crappy experience with it,
compared to what it could be. You might can turn off everything cool about
the graphics and still be able to get by on low crappy framerates, making
combat an excercise in frustration, but is that what you really want to
spend your time doing? Do you really want to cheapen what could be the best
RPG experience of your life?*
I assume you've downloaded the latest driver for that card?
If you decided to upgrade here's what I'd recommend.
get another 512 mb of RAM (less than $40)
get an AGP GeForce 6600 or better, or a Radeon X800 or better. if you go
used you might can snag something like this for less than $100.
if you don't mind spending a little more, a GeForce 6800GS AGP is around
$200 and will run Oblivion beautifully. Your processor might be slightly
underpowered but I think you'd still be able to turn on most of the
graphics options.
I'm assuming you have an AGP slot that the 9200 is occupying now.
Keep in mind power requirements for the newer graphics cards. If your power
supply is less than 350W you might have to upgrade that too depending on
what card you get (around $40 and might not be possible if your case is
some kind of non-standard, vendor specific case).
Other than that if you still persist in trying it without upgrading, here's
what i'd suggest:
install the Direct X 9.0c that shipped on the game disc even if you already
had it previously installed, have it do a reinstall.
download and install the latest drivers for your 9200.
when the game comes up the little pop up box after you first click the icon
go into settings and make sure HDR is off and make sure the settings are
set to low.
* okay that was a little over the top. but not much. :)
