Dictionary.com is also severely biased in favor of American
spellings and definitions.

Just try putting in Dammit and Damnit, the source of this little
subthread.

All encyclopedias and dictionaries are, basically, including
encyclopedia britannica, because that's the biggest market... but why
do you feel there not being a 'damnit' and 'dammit' indicate bias in
favor of US spelling?

It's just the example closest to what this subthread spawned from.

I don't particularly think that an American dictionary is the source
to look at for the English language.

I don't either, especially if you're interested in etymology, and I'm
American--well, Hillbilly actually, but we've been claiming 'em for a while,
so I guess I'll continue the tradition. :-)

However, I consider the American Heritage Dictionary to be a very good
source for more modern connotations, and AFAIK it's American. :-)
