Hate to ruin your day, but application programs can still crash any
operating system around today.

....also windows xp is also perfectly capable of crashing all by itself, as
I can get any version of xp(and 2000, which I ended up sticking with for
gaming) to crash almost on command.

Win98SE comment: Actually, I can agree with that comment, my install of
98SE was also pretty damn stable, almost as "good" as 2k/XP. I'd keep
around a 98SE partition for some older games that want DOS, and I'd really
also just install XP on another partition to avoid the headaches of
compatibility(have fun installing newer M$ DirectX and such under 98) and
the problems and hoop jumping to get WINE and windows programs running
under linux. Actually IIRC if you REALLY want the best windows
compatibility with WINE you really still need to use real M$ libraries
anyways, meaning you'd pretty much want a windows install anyways...

Oh yeah, if you end up with windows, look for an OEM(full, not tyhe
restore crap version) version or other cheap version for sale online. I
ended up with OEM copies of 2k & XP (pro) for c. $50 within months of
their release... (If you're at a university they should sell it for c. $10
too, IIRC, but it's been a while since I've looked at the pricing...)
