This is a snippet from a post I made on another board where yet again
there were
some people who were frustrated with the Gothic/Gothic 2 controls
=============================================================
This may not be what many want to hear, but the most efficient way to
control Gothic and Gothic 2 is with the *keyboard only*. The mouse only
slows you down.
My advice for those having trouble with combat is to switch to the
"classic" Gothic controls. Yes, there was a small learning curve as I
got used to them back in Gothic I, but now I can't imagine playing
G1/G2 any other way.
Here is my setup:
My left hand is over the WSAD keys like in any FPS-type setup. My right
hand hovers over the arrow keys (the ones on the base keyboard, not the
number pad).
Here are the default controls, which I never change cause they suit me
fine:
UP arrow- forward
Down arrow- back
A - strafe left
D - strafe right
Left arrow - turn left
Right arrow - turn right
CTRL - Pick up or use the object in focus
CTRL + (up,right, left) arrow keys - attack forward, right, left,
respectively.
CTRL + down arrow - block
ALT - jump, climb, swim forward
SPACE - Sheath/draw weapon
(note: you can also use 'W' or 'S' for forward and back if you prefer).
For "mouselook" all you have to do is hold down the "R" key and use the
arrow keys to move the camera about. Also, if you are not stationary,
you can use the "R" key to view what's behind you. Very handy for
keeping tabs on wild animals in pursuit!!!
The only time I use the mouse in Gothic/Gothic 2 is to use the wheel to
zoom the camera in.

I mean, I like mouse-centric interfaces too, but using keyboard only
doesn't bother me.
And yeah, I was an old MS-DOS jockey. (I also like vi and emacs).
