Try this, which I posted on the Yahoo Groups SH list a couple
of weeks ago:

I was perusing the Subsim Review forums yesterday, when I came across
a post that mentioned deleting the introduction movies from SH1 will
allow it to run with Windows XP without the other, rather complicated
way of doing it, and without running a DOS emulator or such. I had
heard of this method before, and even mentioned it a few times on this
list. But I had never tried it before. Not having anything to do that
afternoon, I decided to finally give it a shot.

IT WORKS!!!!!

I did have to tweak a couple of other settings, the sound has a little
static and is a bit loud, and the mouse moves slower than I like, but
otherwise it works perfectly. The graphics hold up really well too,
even on my 19 inch LCD monitor. I even installed three of the Hawk
utilities, and they work fine too.
For future reference, I'm going to detail the procedure I followed.
Any past the first two may not be required, but the first two
definitely are. Use trial and error for the rest.

1: Do a FULL INSTALL of the game. This method will not work unless you
do a full install. Next, go into the folder where you installed SH,
then open the CINES folder. Delete the following files: copyr.smk,
logo444.smk, shin.smk. Leave the other files.

2: Access the SH group via the Start button. RIGHT click on the SH
program link, and select "Properties." Click on the "Compatibility"
tab, turn on Compatibility mode by checking the box, and set it to
Windows 95.

3: You may need to run setsound.exe in the SH folder if the game still
won't run. I had to change mine from Soundblaster Pro to regular SB or
100% compatible.

4: You may also want to set the sh.exe itself to run in Compatibility
mode, not just the link in the Start menu. Simply go to the SH folder,
right click on sh.exe, and follow the instructions above in 2.

5: If you install the New Maru utility (the one that randomly changes
the merchant ship tonnage) and want it to run each time you run the
game, follow the instructions with it, then remember to set the new
link (and possibly the SILENT.BAT file itself) to run in Compatibility
mode.

That's it! And with only a little work too!
