If I remember right, it uses some old version of QuickTime, probably a

I got it working! Though I'd tried setting the compatibility to
win95,
apparently it needed a shortcut made first, then set the compatibility in
the shortcut. Then upon startup, a popup complains about quicktime (I
have the latest quicktime installed) but close that, and the main menu
appears, yay!

QuickTime 7.1.6?
Good that it works with that.

The game has an .ini file which lets you increase buffer sizes and
soundquality, and after maxing them out it sounds and looks very nice now.
Also, after installation, simply copying over the CD files into the game
directory eliminates the need to keep the CD in the drive, as far as I can
tell.

Useful to know.

The gameplay is basic Myst-fare, you move from static screen to screen
(oh for a Real-Myst 3D conversion!), with quicktime providing animations
as needed, and the music and voice-overs (some by William S. Burroughs)
are excellent. The game itself is very intriguing, and I've already
experienced chills up the spine early on. Now I'm stuck in a room though,
a study, apparently in a nightmare. I'm not sure if I should Esc and
click on the Eye on the phrenology chart to go back to the 'real world',
or if it's supposed to transition itself.

I remember having trouble figuring that out too. Sometimes you do
have to go back, but not always. And you can switch between the murderer
and the victim.
