Re: What have you been playing... IN APRIL 2012?

I wasn't really happy with the settings provided. Distorted (stretched)

sound effects for explosions are fairly close. Well, it's hard to tell
exactly anyways. Close enough.

It's good that DOSBox allows these configuration knobs. One of the first
things I do on most DOS games purchased there, is to take out the core
game and run with another build of DOSBox (yhkwong's) which allows
Roland MT32/LAPC1 emulation. Some of the older games like Underworld,
Might and Magic 3, Lucasarts and Sierra adventures sound way better with
MT32. However, you do need to find the MT32 control and PCM ROMs on
internet, and it's very likely not legal.

Crusader, however, has music implemented as mod tracks and doesn't need
MIDI.

That particular DOSBox build also supports 3DFX glide, using the
OpenGlide wrapper. Just last night, I spent an hour or so trying to get
Bethesda's Redguard working in 3DFX mode on Win7 x64 machine. And it
worked surprisingly well except that I could not get the game menu to
show up properly (something in how multi-texturing is emulated, or how
the z-order is done) I could only do quick-saves and quick-loads through
hot-keys. I could hear the menu popping up and the selection choices,
and was able to select the save option blindly (once selected, the save
dialog box shows up). Inventory, logs and all other game screens showed
up without any issues. I think, I might actually try making some
progress in that game.
