I'm completely baffled by the Fuss & Sales success of this COD.
I can only think its perhaps they've put it out nearly everywhere in the
world
simultaneously.

The 1st COD seemed to go on forever .
'They' changed Game Engine styles & basic design for COD2 ...IMO the
best of the lot, & the only one that can just about justify a claim to
show 'What Wars Like' (just).
Nothing basically changed in the releases since then ...except they have

really unpleasantly, gratuitously violent.

COD2 was excellent. I'm going to replay it.
Did a COD 3 even get released for PC? I dunno, and I sort of lost
interest in COD 4 after the first level, or section.

COD3 was never released for PC but that's probably to the platform's
advantage as the game was not developed inhouse by Inifinity Ward.
Instead, it was farmed out to a third-party developer, Treyarch, the
same people who did the fifth COD game, "World At War". Like that
game, COD3 got middling to poor reviews.

I still consider the first game the highlight of the series (with the
"United Offensive" expansion its pinnacle). The later games distance
themselves from the "one GI among many" concept the first game
pioneered; as the franchise progresses. your in-game avatar evolves
more and more into the one-man-army super-soldier common to almost
every other FPS. While Call of Duty 2 delicately balances its gameplay
between the two styles, the regenerating health introduced to the
series in the second game definitely moves it closer to the gamestyle
of Halo et al and costs it the unique flavor that made the first game
so enjoyable.

COD2 is still fun, but the series has definitely been moving downhill
with every new release. Having said that, I have yet to play the
latest game ($60? Really?) but -disappointing as the slide may be- I
still expect anything Infinity Ward releases to be better than a
Treyarch product.
