Which effect still looks better than the real film grain effect. Honestly, I
would like them to just drop this effect or at the very least always give the
user an option to switch it off. Contrary to their beliefs it doesn't make
thims look "more real". It just hides detail.
Or lack of detail, which is exactly what you want in a console game
that is pumped up to 1080i but lacks the memory for complex textures.

That's what I believe anyway. I don't remember any PC games that are not
console ports with this feature. I think the first one I played was Mass
Effect and it was the first thing that got switched off. Just out of curiosity
can anyone think of a PC only game that had this feature?

Yeah unfortunately, Day of Defeat back in 2005 boasted of this new feature making the game more realistic for the 1940's period. I hated it then and I hate it with a passion now. So no, it's not exclusive to consoles. Maybe what was new to PC in 05 is the big, new in-thing for consoles? Or maybe Tim O is right and its useful for hiding a lack of detail? Dunno.

A little back up for my post...

Damn... replied to my own post twice now but couldn't resist this paragraph from the link I gave...

"The grain effect can also help with anti-aliasing, as the additional noise can help to trick your eyes into thinking that the edges are smooth. Aliasing is one thing that the human eye picks up relatively easily, so using something like a graining effect can help to remove the aliased edges, shaders, and mipmap boundaries that are susceptable to texture shimmering".
