I agree with you on this comment. GTA3 tested the waters for the 3D
open world gameplay style and GTA:VC nailed it in terms of gameplay,
story, voice acting, and graphics. Plus the depiction of the 80s was
great satire. GTA:SA was just more of the same. All of the added
things to do, clothing options, haircuts, etc. had no impact on the
game and were really just overkill. The 90s satire just isn't as
funny as the 80s. Considering all of the content, it was probably the
best of the series, but by this point it all was just too familiar.
GTA4 is almost like going back to GTA3. New engine, but back to the
basics in terms of theme and things to do outside of the storyline
missions. I think this was purposely done to leave the door open to
similar improvements in future sequels. The "Friends List" is an
interesting concept borrowed from The Sims, but can tend to be a bit
annoying. None of the perks they provide are all that crucial to
finishing the game. I got use to the car handling. Its now just
impossible to pull off hairpin turns and requires a fair amount of
braking to make any turns at all. I like the new TPS cover system,
but it has made gun fights alot easier.
So here we go again, I'm sure the next iteration will be fantastic as
they optimize the engine and put back in some of the visual style,
satire, and side modes that made VC and SA great.
