Even Crysis which claims to be coded for Quad cores really doesn't perform any better running on one. What current games need are fast CPU's, and the C2duo's are the best bang for your buck. Period. In your first post you made it clear that you were wanting to build a "gaming" PC. If you had said you also wanted to be able to do heavy duty video/photo editing and have a dozen programs all running at the same time, then a Quad core would be what you are looking for. Just remember to take full advantage of multi core CPU's the program needs to be coded to use them. And you also mentioned that you are running XP not Vista so that also has an impact on how the CPU's are utilized. Vista does a better job dealing with multi core CPU's.
I rarely do video and photo editing. However, I do recording and playback of HD videos with my HDTV tuner card. However, my dual core system is fine with that.
I also saw that you have been thinking about getting a 4850 with 1GB of RAM. This is overkill since you have said more then once that you don't plan on moving past 1280x1024. 512MB will be plenty of RAM for what you are running at. Why not just get a 4870 with 512MB? You do know that the 4870 used DDR5 RAM which really gives amazing bandwidth over the DDR3 on the 4850.
Then, how come people (including the ones in http://www.rage3d.com/board/showthread.php?p=1335700128 ) are saying to get 1 GB of RAM for games that use highest/maximum resolution graphics for Far Cry 2, Oblivion (still need to play this), Fall Out 3, etc.? Don't I still need the extra memory for those even if I am at 1280x1024 resolution? I also forgot to mention that I am only getting one video caard so no dual or triple cards!
As for the whole TV out question, have you read my response to this issue? Just look for my sig in your post about overlay, this should help. JLC
Um, I don't see your newsgroup signatures with links?
