The best ones were like that. In Ultima 6, there was a "look up a fact
in the manual" copy protection question that integrated so nicely into
the game that for years I didn't even recognize it as copy protection.
I remember Starflight 2 also had something like this. Some kind of
police ships would show up and ask something, or else. The answers
could be found on a star map included with the game, I think. If you
got it wrong, you got the "or else" :) But it didn't happen that often
especially considering Starflight 2 was a long game, hours of
exploration of a largish map.
Much nicer than "input nth word on page x, line y"...
