Nothing to do with games, but I figured I'd ask in here first...For starters what type of network are you running B/G/N ? Does the laptop
We live in a rural location - nearest other house is about 500 yards away.
Tonight, my laptop started acting strangely with the net connection going
off sometimes.
Turns out it's connecting to a "Netgear" unsecured wireless network, with
a signal strength of none or one bar. Of course as soon as I saw what was
happening I disconnected from the Netgear network and reconnected to my
own Belkin.
Anyway, I've tried reconnecting to the Netgear one to see what's up but it
just ends up giving a nil signal.
I can't see the network on my desktop - just 2 yards away from the laptop.
We recently took the laptop away on holiday to USA so I connected to
several different wireless networks.
1) Could it be the laptop is "remembering" one of the networks it
connected to whilst in the good old US of A?
2) Is it possible I am picking up a network from our closest neighbour
(through 2 feet thick stone walls and across a 500 yard field)
3) Could there be another explanation (there's no one parked near the
house either)
It's driving me mad, so if anybody can help explain it I would appreciate
it.
have a different type then your router? I know when I used to have a B
router I couldn't see anyone else but my own router. But then I upgraded to
a G router and network adapter and now I see up to four of my neighbors at
one time. What was even worse is one of my neighbors was using my network (I
now have it locked down) I found out only because when I looked at my
network places I saw a strange folder, when I opened it I discovered my
neighbors tax forms for the last three years!
I called her and asked if she realized she was using my network. She told me
that when she was in the back of her house with her laptop my signal was
stronger so she used it! I then told her that I was able to see her tax info
and that put an end to that!.
So it's possible that someone's router is sending out a strong enough
signal for your laptop to pick it up. Why the other PC doesn't see it could
be a lot of things.
You should set up your network adapter to only connect to your router. It's
easy to do and this way you never have to worry about connecting to someone
else.
