Really?

Check whther 4 cores is really the problem by CTRL-ALT-DEL to System
Manager and Set Affinity for a pair of cores, say 0 and 1.

I thought about this (some people recommend a single core) but it won't
allow me to set the affinity on mm.exe. Can't remember what the error
message was, but I can obviously adjust the core affinity for most other
apps.

Go search for "imagecfg.exe" on the web. This little program allows
you to permamnently change the affinity of any executable. You need to
install it on your machine exactly as per instructions. Iirc, one of
the install target directories is hidden, so you might have to install
via the console window. Do a precautionary system-restore before
installation.

Make a backup of the 'mm' executable before trying imagecfg. If
the Task Manager is complaining about processor affinity, there might
be something wierd in the structure of the "mm" executable and
imagecfg might not work either, but it would be worth a try.
