I received Crysis today.
The demo ran perfectly. When I double click the icon to start the game I
get an immediate BSOD with the error 0x0000008e.
I get exactly the same with Bioshock.
At first I thought the problem with Bioshock was my ATI card, but the
problem persisted after installing my brand new Nvidia 8800GT.
The Crysis demo ran fine on the new 8800GT.
So I've tried:
Taking one ram stick out then the other - so it isn't ram.
Removing my sound card - not that.
Removing non necessary cards - not them.
Disabling virus checker - not that.
Changing my DVD rom drive for another - not that.
Is it a coincidence that these are the only 2 games I have with "Game for
windows" on the box?
Bioshock used to work fine, but stopped suddenly - I hadn't installed
anything - it just stopped. I presume the same problem is being caused
with
Crysis.
Every other game I have works perfectly.
I notice that both games use securerom v7. My many years experience with
these problems tells me it's this that's causing the problem.
I'm at a total loss as to what to do now.
The publishers just want you to start pirating their games...
Well f*ck me sideways with a pirate DVD I found the problem.
I use Daemon tools for BF1942 and BF2 so I don't need the disc in the drive.
Trawling around various forums searching for "securom 7 error" brings up
YASU.exe
This "cloaks" daemon tools from securom.
The games started immediately I used this.
So, yet again, I have bought BF2, BF1942 etc. I bought Crysis. I bought
Bioshock.
The reward? Weeks of being unable to play Bioshock - not even the courtesy
of an error message. Crysis not working and a full evening lost pissing
about with hardware - with the added risk of me damaging it when messing
with ram etc.
A real reward for rewarding the game writers and publishers.
