Linksys probably gets by calling it a Gaming Router by having ports
already open for all the well known games, not by any increase in
speed it provides for gaming.
"Gaming" routers are known as such because they provide quality of service
features. Typically this is simply smart packet queuing (AKA "traffic
shaping"), such as letting UDP packets (used by games, VOIP, and DNS) go
ahead of TCP (used by web, mail, and P2P). This way your outgoing game
packets get to "cut the line" ahead of the less time-critical traffic.
If you use a Linux-based router, look for the "Wondershaper" script, which
sets up the Linux kernel to do exactly this kind of prioritization.
