I'd recommend getting a Samsung HD501J (500GB 7200rpm
SATA2). It is almost as fast at the Raptors in most test
and is faster in a few. It's also very quiet and very
reliable.
In terms of architecture, I would recommend a 2-disk
setup. Make sure both disks are completely blank (no
diagnostic partitions etc) and install your OS on one disk
and create a Data/Apps partition on the other.
The first partition you place on a disk is placed at the
outside of the platters going in; the performance of the
disk is better at the outside (due to the increased
rotational speed) than at the centre. The seek times will
be much the same, but you will have a better sustained
transfer rate - which will approach that of your average
10K Raptor.
In addition, there are plenty of studies that demonstrate
that Striped (RAID 0) is rarely any faster in a real-world
situation (due to the nature in which the drives are used
by the OS), which when combined with a halved MTBF means
that you are putting more stuff at risk for little
benefit.
So placing both partitions at the start of 2 separate
disks is a reasonable solution.
Thanks. I read about the outer part of the disk being the
faster portion on a site that has recommended partition
setups. They also said like you did about OS on first
partition of a disk and extra data on the first partition of
the second disk.
I think I remember reading this before when I put my old PC
together but that was over three years ago.
