I'm kinda new to playing online but I've been playing this enemy
territory quake wars online and have been enjoying it, however,it
seems to me that there doesnt seem to be that many people playing the
game online as there is lots of empty servers and ones that arent
hardly ever seem to be full at all.

not only that, maybe its just my imagination but I feel like its
possible bots are playing even in the few online games there are. I'm
not sure if this is common practice when there arent enough players?

I notice if someone grabs a vehicle like a transport and I just want
to ride in back and I hit enter, I notice suddenly I'm a driver.
leading me to believe the person who intially got the vehicle wasnt a
real player as it wouldnt have booted him from the driver position if
he was real.

also I went into play the "against the computer mode" where you are in
fact against bots and I recognized alot of the screenames from a
actual online game I had recently!

I hate the idea I joined a game where I utilized teamwork and took
down an objective and was basking in the glory from what i thought was
human players just to realize quite frankly its possible that nobody
was like, wow great teamwork, it was really just me and maybe 2-3
other shmoes playing alongside 25 bots.

are there any games where the online community are just playing in
droves? some kind of FP shooter? its more fun when I feel like I'm
playing with a ton of people rather than a handful some of which might
not even be real.


Firstly, when you get onto a server, look at the player list (usually tab or
space). If they have a ping of 0, then they're bots - might help stop you
wasting time!

The best MP FPS is, IMHO, Battlefield 2. It is available on budget and has
lots of free mods - including POE2 and Desert Conflict. Lots of servers
always available.

Its successor, BF2142, is probably more like ET:QW and still very popular,
but more of a resource hog and not as good IMO.

Others to try:

Counter Strike: Source not in the same vein, but good stuff.

Team Fortress 2

Fortress Forever (free mod for Half Life 2).

BF1942 - the one before BF2. Looks dated now, but the gameplay is great and
again lots of free mods available.

Looks like there are some other goodies in the pipeline, but if you want my
advice go after 2142 for a futuristic setting or BF2 for a contemporary one.
