* STALKER (replay)
I tried STALKER several months back and just couldn't get into it.
It's probably not a bad game; it just doesn't grab me at all. But
people keep raving about it, so I figured I ought to give the game
another try. And you know what? It still doesn't do anything for me.
The respawning bad-guys, the aimless side-quests, the poorly paced
story; I'm sorry. It's just not for me, guys. Uninstalled six or seven
hours into the game.
Tut ... tut ... :-)
I've been playing this again and have really got back into it. I think that I was just getting 'tired' of the same environment so a few months break has freshened it up again. Still think it's one the most original games for many years and like almost all new ideas always in someway flawed.
* Medal of Honor Airborne (new)
When Medal of Honor Allied Assault came out, I enjoyed it; it was a
decent enough WW2 FPS with the occassional spark of brilliance. But
once Call of Duty came out, MoHAA compared so unfavorably that I have
a hard time going back to it. And while Medal of Honor Airborne
obviously tryies to capture some of Call of Duty's brilliance, in the
end I'd still rather play the Call of Duty. Aside from the most obvious failings (such as nigh invincible super
soldiers in the last few levels, tossing away any attempt at realism)
and that it's extremely short, the game just doesn't pack the same
punch as Call of Duty. The levels don't play as smoothly, the AI
doesn't move as realistically. The "start (almost) anywhere you want"
feature was sort of neat, but it sacrificed the pacing and flow of the
game. A lot of effort obviously went into this game's development, but
unfortunately it doesn't pan out.
Played the demo and even as a big fan on WWII FPSes I still didn't like it. The reviews only confirmed that it wasn't worth spending my time on, although from what I understand it only takes 6-8 hours to complete anyway and the first few levels aren't that good. Oh well just have to wait for CoD 4 to be released or Crysis or Far Cry 2.
* Overlord (new)
It seems to me that Overlord is going to be one of those games like
Psychonauts and System Shock 2; a game that gets critical reviews but
does poorly in the stores. Probably because it's hard to describe;
it's a third person hack-n-slash, except you lead an army of gremlins,
so it has a sort of strategy aspect and you can be good or evil and
modify your abilities like an RPG and... wait, where are you going?
See what I mean?
But it's still a tremendously fun and, for all its dismemberment and
evil, CUTE game. It looks good, it controls well, and has a nice
variety of weapons. My complaints are minor; some of the levels in the
latter half of the game could have used some streamlining, and I
didn't care much for the boss fights, but otherwise I had a blast. How
can I hate a game that lets me lead a horde of pumpkin-wearing imps?
Played the demo and thought it was quite good but probably only one for me to buy until there aren't any new titles being released that I want and it's in the £10-£15 range. Had a feeling that it maybe one of those games that my interest lasts not much longer that the demo itself.
* Bioshock
Got about halfway through and I like the game but not a classic as it's already started feeling a little repetitive. Still looks absolutely beautiful though.
* TF2
Just a wonderful game ... the sort of MP I like, fast and doesn't take itself that serious with a variety of different classes to suit different styles of play and it's probably the only game where it can be classed as fun to die. My only worry is how long it will take for the urber-nerds to turn up and almost ruin the game as for Counter Strike:Source
* DEFCON
Still firing this up for a game a global thermo nuclear war now and again. An absolute bargain at £10.
