Re: The hidden flaw of widescreen monitors

The purpose of this thread is to highlight something I didn't realize
when I bought my widescreen monitor last year. At the time, everything
ran fine. Now, things like BioShock and STALKER (with using the
advanced lighting renderers) have issues. If this was a normal CRT
monitor I could have easily pulled down the res to something like
1024x768, which I believe would have been low enough for a playable
rate, then I could join in the threads here. However, being a
widescreen LCD with a native res of 1680x1050, I simply can't do that.
As far as I'm concerned, anything other than native is simply not
worth playing, and since the hardware isn't enough to run the game
properly, I can't play.

The driver for my nVidia card (8800) has a setting that tells it to not
scale the image if the resolution is set to something smaller than the
native resolution.

So for my 24" Dell widescreen (native rez is 1920 x 1200), if a game is too
demanding, I just set the resolution to 1600 x 1200 or if things are really
bad, something smaller like 1650 x 1080 or even 1280 x 1024.

The former still allows a native rez, but just some black bars about 1.25"
down both sides (since the vertical resolution is still 1200 - same as the
native).

The latter puts black bars all the way around the image; the image is a bit
smaller of course, but still native. It's the same size as if I had
alternatively bought, say, a smaller 19" LCD anyways.
