Maybe I have missed something with SS1 as I only know SS2 but in the
latter case I found the atmosphere severly lacking after it repeated
itself with each new crew member that you didn't found alive. Was SS1
different there, e.g. no stupid hopes raised you might meet someone?

The sense of isolation was there in the original System Shock as well.
However, I found SS2 to be a fairly average game, especially in level
design. System Shock 1 had a lot more believable levels. For instance,
the flight hangar was a huge area with very high roof, which was sort
of unmatched at the time (Ultima Underworld2's Lord British' throne
room had some of that feel). There were fewer twisty maze-like
corridors. The combat was completely non-RPG skill based, which is
something I liked for the type of world and background depicted.

System Shock still is among the best FPS I have ever played. I rate it
alongside, DOOM, FarCry and to get the post back to the topic, HL2.

If not for its keyboard-based unwieldy interface, it'd be a very easy
recommendation for any gamer (via DOSBox) since, other than that the
rest of the game has aged quite gracefully.
