Just an update (in case anyone runs into the same problem and finds this thread):

I played this part now on an old P4 2GHz with Geforce 6600 and was able to complete it. On this machine the canon sight now zoomed in completely so that the lights were recognizeable.

I also tried this part on a Notebook (Thinkpad T61 with Nvidia Quadro NVS 140M which basically is a Geforce 8600M) and noticed the same problem as on my main machine with Quadro FX 4600 (which basically is a Geforce 8800GTX). So it seems Call of Cthulhu is somewhat incompatible with the Nvidia drivers for their DX10 cards.
