It's no exaggeration to say that the Speccy, the Volkswagen Beetle of

getting

today without it.
Personally my home computing started with my father buying a Research
Machines 380Z. A friend had a ZX80 we used to code on, then my first
machine was a ZX81. I went from that to an Amstrad CPC464 so missed
out on the Speccy.

We started with a ZX81. It was so incredibly exciting. Besides the thrill
of seeing programmes entered working on your telly, it was the sense of
limitless possibilities that was so great.
I think we had to take it back at least 3 times - it got to the stage when
there was a bigger queue for ZX81 returns than to buy stuff in WHSmith - you
would literally hand in a box (that could have contained anything) and they
would hand a new one out!
My mum and dad then bought our first colour telly just before Christmas -
which we thought was great - it turned out because they had bought me and my
brother a joint Christmas present of a 48k Spectrum. We had both wanted one
for ages. Our neighbour came around and we couldn't get him off Donkey
Kong.
I still remember how exciting it was looking at stuff in colour. COLOUR FFS.
Awesome. God, the hours we had programming the ZX81 and the Spectrum to do
such simple stuff. We went through a machine code book by someone called
Lesli or Leslie something. <sigh>
