I can get all this for around £350 on ebay. Then I saw a pc with a duel
core
Intel Pentium D running at 6.8Ghz (2x3.4 I think) for only £160. Now, to
me,
the 6.8Ghz figure sounds amazing, when compared to the 3Ghz ish of the
Core
2.

The Pentium D is something that I was thinking about myself. It would
be compatible with my new socket 775 motherboard and would not be
hackneyed by the 400MHZ DDR in my system.

A Core2 Duo would also fit on this board but could only run at a FSB
of 800MHZ

I think you'll find that the 6.8GHZ is the speed of the two cores
combined. You'll still only have a 3.4GHZ CPU but will be able to
make use of the second core to run more tasks than on a single core
CPU.

Ah, I see! So, it wont actually run at 6.8Ghz. I getcha...

Any views on which would be better, given the price? I was prepared to pay
the extra for the core 2, but is it worth it?

I'm a little out of touch, but I believe these are the main
differences.

The Core2 has more L2 Cache and runs at a FSB of 1066MHZ as opposed to
the 800MHZ of the Pentium D. It's a more powerful processor so wins in
the "bang for buck" category.

I do find myself wondering whether I can make good use of a Core2 Duo
yet though.

If you do go Core2 Duo you will need a new mainboard and RAM to make
the best use of it.

Cool. I aim to get a whole new system for my cash, so presumably the Ram and
mainboard would be compatable! It'd be a bit dumb if not. ;-)

Somebody like Shawk or John Lewis will put you right if I've
misinformed you.

No, its cool. Thanks!!
