|It's unfortunate this whole CRT vs. LCD thing became a flamewar, but
|its more unfortunate for you guys because Garrot is right regarding
|most of the technical issues he has pointed out. I use both LCD and
|CRT, but CRT exclusively for games and LCD exclusively for coding. The
|delay is noticable to me even on a 2ms LCD (VX922), and when you see
|games side by side on a cloned signal, you can see the LCD renders
|graphics with more artifacts, things come across looking more cartoony
|than realistic (which one is better might come down to your individual
|preferences though).
|
|Regarding tearing, the only way you're going to NOT see tearing is by
|synching to the refresh rate. When I sync to 60hz on an LCD, I feel
|hindered by the framerate response and my scores plummet, and then I
|have a certain amount of motion blur to deal with. LCDs I find are
|fine for certain types of games, ones that don't require rapid motion
|like Titan Quest. I still prefer playing Titan Quest on my CRT
|though.
|
|No doubt I like the other benefits of LCD -- the crispness of text,
|which is critical to me as a programmer (I find it impossible to read
|on a CRT anymore, my eyes are spoiled.. not just a CRT but ANY analog
|signal now gives me migraines to read on). I even prefer developing
|web graphics on a CRT, despite the fact that photographs always look
|more realistic on my CRT. My Viewsonic LCD has a 1000:1 contrast
|ratio which makes for a lovely coding experience.
|
|Although I'm getting older (40's), I have seen my scores in
|Counterstrike, RS:3, Unreal, GRAW, Quake, etc. skyrocket relative to
|other players over the last 3 years as LCDs have become more prevalent
|and CRTs are getting harder to find, and I believe that the only way I
|can so consistently beat teenagers at these reflex-based games on my
|mediocre machine is the fact that my 21" CRT is giving me a
|performance edge. It definately does give me the edge to be able to
|play in whatever resolution runs optimally on my computer, without
|making performance sacrifices to run at my LCDs native resolution, or
|dealing with scaling as my monitor scales down to lower resolutions
|(looking worse).
|
|To truly experience the difference, you need to have both your LCD and
|your CRT of choice running in cloned mode off your video card,
|otherwise you're comparing apples to oranges.
|
|I'm fortunate to have enough desk space such that I can run a cloned
|setup off my primary PC, getting the best of both worlds.
Thanks for that post.. great example of someone who actually has tested both
side by side. Makes me feel better I didn't by into the 'hype' of LCD yet. Maybe
in a few years when they get the 'kinks' out. ;)
