GRAW demo is out, get it at your favourite mirror site :-)
I've played through this demo extensively. Here are some thoughts:
Good points (Gameplay):
- Now the enemies don't possess the ability to just pick you off with
incredible, off-the-chart great shots on a regular basis
- Checkpoint saves makes the game MUCH less frustrating than the original GW
- Quite good AI (most of the time), unlike the abominable Raven Shield:
Lockdown - it actually flanks and suppresses you here
- Most importantly, we might have seen (for the first time) in a Tom Clancy
shooter a semi-realistic shots fired/enemies killed count, assuming you
adopt some semi-realistic tactics and don't try to lonewolf it all. No more
"one player kills 100+ AI per level" ala Lockdown
Bad points:
- Sometimes the AI needs to be "triggered" before it'd react to you
presence, by virtue of you needing to be on or pass a certain pixel in a
particular area. Admittedly, it doesn't happen often.
- Your squads' speed in responding and acknowledging your orders can be a
bit slow
- Mexico city just isn't a great place to base the game on. The urban
setting just didn't excite like the orignal GW and its expansion packs did.
Graphics/Graphics engine:
Unfortunately, this is mostly all bad news. Simply put, if you don't have at
least a 6800 (or an ATI equivalent), along with a pretty fast CPU, don't
even think about trying to play this at all. I have a p4 3.0 with a 6800 GT
and 1 gig of ram and it would chug like HELL on anything above 1024x768. And
that is already after editing the settings.xml file to disable HDR, the
presence of which actually made the game totally unplayable on all but the
most LOLtastically crap settings on all but the beastiest machines, if the
forums are to be believed. That was my experience also. After disabling HDR,
I am running with most things on medium at 1024x768 with decent FPS and
results.
That is except for the fact that you will not get AA for this game at all.
Zilch. As such, if you've been looking at PR screenshots and marvelling at
the quality of those, just realise that you've been had. For about 95% of
gamers, this game will at be at best moderately decent looking to pretty
ugly. This engine is poorly optimised, fullstop. It's compounded by the fact
that you need to edit a XML file to switch off HDR to make the game playable
in the first place (unless you have a totally cutting edge system), which
will in turn make this thing as unapproachable as one could imagine for your
novice user.
The developers have also stated that there will be no dedicated server tools
for MP out of the box and the game will only ship with 5 maps and limited MP
play modes. On the technical front, this thing is looking like a good bet in
terms of stealing the crown for being the "Buggiest/Most poorly optimised
and Under-done Technically" award for an intial release from the Battlefield
series.
