Gaming and router issue

I've got a technical question for y'all. I use a Linksys router with my DSL line, and until recently, I've had no trouble with sharing access with my housemates and neighbors. But lately, I've been having some troubles with FBS gaming.
Basically-- and not surprisingly-- my ping goes WAY up if someone's decided to do lots of downloading. And lately, with Unreal Tournament, I've encountered an odd "ping creep" where my ping starts off OK, but starts to climb up and up well past 3-500.
Apparently, there's this Quality of Service feature with Linksys routers that would enable me to give higher priorities to certain applications-- like Unreal. However, I haven't been able to find a decent FAQ on the subject of configuring this feature.
Does anyone here have some decent information on how I might be able to preserve my own gaming, _before I have to start getting miserly over my bandwidth?
.
