Now, dare I dream of
building a 'bleeeeeding cutting edge' game box? Me? ME? Heh! Hell
Yeah!
It's *MY* turn! Do I feel guilty about this choice? Nope, I still help
the kids out all the time, I'm just focused on having my toy now :)

I could have written that about myself, almost to the word.

My advice to you is to do it, build your dream machine, the specs you
quote look pretty mouth watering on paper.

But, be prepared to be slightly underwhelmed by the results. Any
differences to your gaming will be fleeting. I think you'll soon
realise that the thought of having a top end gaming PC is perhaps more
attractive than the reality.

It's nice, but short lived and most of your games won't look earth
shatteringly better.

Have fun finding that out though, I know I did :)

Thanks for all the replies Rob, and everybody!!

It's built, it's closed up, and....it... *RUNS!!!* 3dmark2006 in XP 64,
total was 4668 I think. Trust this, the 7800GTX gets most of the credit for
the increase over last time with the same X2 but AGP 6800GT and xp Pro 32
bit. Last time it wasn't quite 3000.
Okay, here it is:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ *tray*, with Gigabyte fan/hs-wid purty blue LED's
Gigabyte GA-K8N-SLI (F2) -- using onboard LAN, 10 USB2.0, 8 channel audio, 4
SATAII, 2 IDE
1 x eVGA eGeForce 7800GTX ACS3 256 meg at x16
2 x 1gig Micron PC3200 in dual channel at DDR400
2 x 160g Western Digital ATA100 7200rpm
1 x 80g Seagate Barracuda ATA 100 7200 rpm
1 x NEC DVD-RW dual layer ND-3550A
(no SATA drives for it yet, give me time!) (no floppy)
no-name "Made In China" black full tower case with good layout, top to
bottom drive bays and good airspace up front. 7 fans total running in this
box.
boot drive: WD160 in two NTFS partitions, C:\=XP Pro SP2 in 112gigs and
G:\=XP Pro X64 in 40 gigs. Dual boot, excellent.
data drive: WD160 in one NTFS partition 160g.
Old drive I'm recovering stuff from is the Seagate 80g.
Now that the system is all installed nice n neat, I gotta get some games
installed on this thing!
McG.
