I think your memory is lying to you :D

Back in the day, when Doom took over our lives, for many of us it was
the first of its type we ever experience (noticed I said "most", me
included).

The internet was still relativly new to the mainstream so we didnt have
strategy guides and cheat codes galore. In fact I think I stumbled
through the first doom a few times before I even KNEW there was a way
to cheat. I remember running in fear the first time I ran into a
baron of hell and I ran out of shotgun shells.

I think a lot of us "old timers" are trying to compare new games with
the thrill of the oldm and we just can't get it because it's not new to
us anymore.
