Why do you buy the games you do?

Bit of a strange question in a way, but I was thinking about my reasoning
for spending around £150 on games in the last few months - a bit higher than
average for me, but not totally OTT.

What made me buy these games? Some have been out for over a year, some just
released.

Breaking it down to the last few:

The Punisher - £3.99 from Gameplay. It was cheap and it got around 65% on
Gamerankings.com I figured if I don't like it I can eBay it.

The Movies - £17.99 from Gameplay.com. Got rave reviews from PCZone, plus a
good rating on Gamerankings. Doesn't sound like my type of game, but I know
my 8 yr old will love the concept, but probably won't run on her PC. What
the heck. It's £18 and it's Christmas - why not?

Thief 3 - £9.99 from a shop I passed by in the local town. Got great
reviews from PCZone and the "community". I had vowed not to buy anything
else from IonStorm, but I loved the first 2 - despite not finished them -
and figured that £10 is nothing in the scheme of things.

Winding back a bit (via Quake4, B&W2, and several others)

FEAR - got great reviews - mainly for the AI. One review mentioned the Half
Life level "Surface Tension". It was only £18. If not for that, I wouldn't
have taken the plunge.

BF2 - BF1942 is genius. BF:V stank. I'll love the mods either way. Paid
full price (I think £25 on release?).

Why do I buy games? If they have money off and excellent reviews, I'll tend
to buy them - if there is at least one idea that I like the sound of in
there.

If they are a sequel to a game I loved (Deus Ex, BF1942, Half Life, Tribes)
I'll buy on release day, no matter about reviews.

If they are dead cheap and don't sound too bad, I'll take a punt.

If, however, it is for my daughter's GameCube, they have to have excellent
reviews (85% plus), be less than full price and sound like we will like
playing them.

What makes you buy a game?
