I recommend waiting just a little bit and getting nVidia 6800GS AGP
once they come out. The PCIe versions are going for $190-200. If
paying $50 more is not a big deal, then you can also pick up 6800GT
AGP.

AGP limits your choices a bit. The X800 series cards from ATI are
pretty good, except that they miss out on few features, which you can
easily enable on nVidia cards especially with your 17" LCD (which
should not have a very high native resolution) - things like floating
point frame buffers (very playable in Far Cry at 1024x768) or SM3.0
support. Once the XBox 360 ports start trickling in to the PC side,
you'll see more games using these features and it's always better to
have a choice, rather than you being forced by hardware.

I am also in the same situation. The 9800Pro is now a bit slow,
especially for the 1680x1050 resolution that's optimal for my PC. I'll
probably go with a PCIe motherboard next year and an ATI X1800XL
(already $320 and falling) for a reasonable price (~200-250 and also
the 512meg version :) ) and then overclock it to near X1800XT speeds.
