Had my 9800Pro for some time with no probs and it's now sitting in a friends
PC still with no probs - probably a couple of years old now. I had to RMA
the very first one I owned though - coloured speckles from the word go. I
dont believe the HS and fan was bedded properly. Overclockers.co.uk changed
it for the one above and everything was sweet. Sapphire was the make of
both if it makes a difference.
To the OP - get another card from Ebay if you can't afford to buy new.
Doesn't sound like the card is worth trying to save (based on burning
smell).
