Walter is clearly ignorant of the fact that there are numerous cracks for
playing offline, regardless of the offline mode. They are not widly visible
or used since there is an offline mode, but they do exist and were used.
These include but are not limited to outright cracks and server emulators.
People always ask how I know these things and accuse me of piracy. One,
I know people who do this sort of thing, and no, I'm not going to turn
friends
in, regardless of how badly someone judges my morals. And two, I use CD
cracks, like many people, because I like to protect my CD's. So I often am
looking around and reading up on these kinds of things. Thirdly, as a
programmer,
I'm interested in how these things work.
Walter flatly denied the *fact* that the game was cracked and stolen
directly
from Valves servers within 24 hours of it's being released. I know this
for certain because I saw it being played, by co-workers, without any
connection to steam. The hud was messed up, but that was fixed in a
matter of days. Valve did a big spin job and claimed that they "leaked"
the serial number in use in order to catch people. But it had nothing to
do with the serial. I saw it done. People were using a bug in steam to
bypass the key check altogether and get the content delivered, and then
running a "no steam" crack.
Valve did ban tons of accounts. But all of those people were able to make
new accounts, so it was no real loss, except if they had games tied
specifically
to their original accounts. But even then, there are also cracks to get
around that.
Walter a complete apologist. Steam is garbage. It doesn't prevent any
piracy.
It never can be, because it's impossible to keep people from doing things
on their computers because they are so open ended. They can't stop you,
no matter how hard they try, from using a debugger and a bit of knowledge
to trace and remove checks, etc. No code can be written that cannot be
modified and redistributed to remove checks. Even dongles, although they
are more difficult to deal with. But nothing is impossible.
Starforce protection is the first I have seen that is actually pretty good
at
slowing piracy. A few SF games I have have yet to see no cd cracks for
them (I like to use no cd cracks, like many people, to protect my
originals).
I've seen that there are some cracks for it, but they involve painful
procedures
like having to disconnect drives or run several programs that break SF. I am
too afraid of viruses and trojans to trust these programs, so I use the
original
discs.
Steam is merely an inconvienience and memory hog for the people who use it
legitimately. It simply does not do what Walter thinks it does. He has his
head
about 3 feet deep in the sand and refuses to come up for air.
