When HL2 came out, I was using an FX5900. There were similar beefs in here
from me about Valves choice to cut out the shader model codepath for the FX
series cards. My DX9 card was forced to run in DX8.1 and Valve wasn't going
to change that. Valve chose the codepath that followed the DX9 standard
for floating point math calls of 16 and 24 bit presicion. Nvidias
implementation did 16 and 32 bit precision plus there was some pipe layout
in the FX that was 2 x 4 where ATI's was 1 x 8. Nvidias implementation was
slower even using full 32 bit precision.
This situation is a little different, as ATI simply left support for SM3.0
out until the X1xxx series.
So who's really at fault? Valve for taking advantage of correct use of
what's there TO use, or the hardware people for not putting it in there or
not putting it in right?
Hardware people. This time the shoe is on the other foot, is all.
