Alright, I'll find the demo and give that a shot.
You missed the second key word up there: "Class" based. Heavy gunner,
medic, sniper, spy etc. FORTRESS.
I liked Quake, Quake2, Unreal, DukeNukem3D and all the Tombraiders for the
same reason... it's ME out and about in that world.
As far as the Quakes go: I enjoyed Quake and Quake2 because they were more
open to exploring everything and you just generally head toward the goal
with fewer restrictions on the character. I couldn't stand the RtcW demo so
never bought it. Quake4 is in one respect exactly the same as Doom3; it is
rigidly clamped to rails. There is just not much you CAN do but go for the
ride. D3 and Q4 are not "open" games at all. They're like American McGee's
ALICE. But even Alice had a little more latitude for exploration than D3
and Q4.
I think that most of the people who I've seen complaining about these newer
games being 'corridor shooters' are really looking for the same thing I am.
Oh I do enjoy Doom3 and Quake4. But when the movie is over, it's time to
play online. Half-Life 2 was much more open than most of the games in the
last couple years.
With Doom3 (and soon with Quake4) I played through once, then played again
just rooting around seeing whatever I could. With these games, you are
pushed to a timebase to get something done. Screw that.
For me, the real enjoyment comes from exploring and discovering all the new
stuff, hidden stuff, easter eggs, whatever. Just give me a loosely defined
goal and forever to complete it in :) I'm happy.
In real life I *have* to be a team player. In a game I want freedom. Team
Play is stifling. This includes the class based action strats like RTCW,
as well as the so-called 'shooters' that are clamped to rails like D3, Q4
and Alice. 'corridor' shooters, or "Herded Action". I do enjoy these
shorter games, just not near as much as I did Quake, Unreal, Half-Life2. I
think you can see why I just can't stand CS at all. that is not my kind of
game.
isn't it odd then that I found CTF so much fun?
