My CPU usually runs around 40 degrees (C) at idle, and about 50-55 under load. The chipset is passively cooled with a large heatsink and runs around 32-34 degrees. My graphics chip (GeForce 6600 GT, Gigabyte, copper heatsink/heatpipe only) seems to idle at 55-58 degrees and under load gets up to about 85 degrees. That sounds very hot, but I've read of graphics cards with fans getting about that hot anyways. Anybody have any idea how "safe" these temperatures are? Surely those kinds of temperatures shorten the cards lifespan. Any anecdotes of cards just dying from heat?
I have two case fans, both are Vantec Stealths, putting in around 40-50 CFM of airflow out of the case, combined. These are getting on in years and I'm considering replacing them with Nexus 80mm fans, they aren't as quiet as they once were, despite having lubricated the bearing about once a year. The airflow will be about 10 CFM lower, because the fans run at a little lower RPM.
The varying of temperature is more likely to damage solid state electronics IMO.
So long as its operating in its designed "range" then there is no problem.
