It's somewhat depressing, personally. There are web boards that are so
damn unusable (no threads!!) that it just kills me.
This is my experience with usenet:
- start newsreader
- press SPACE, get a list of newsgroups with new message counts
- press SPACE, get to the first newsgroup and get a thread summary
- press SPACE, start reading the first message in the first thread
- press SPACE to go through each message
- press F to reply as desired to any message in any thread.
- eventually dump out with no unread messages
All the interactions are immediate enough that I am never
conscious of having to wait for anything in order to stay focused
on the conversations.
All the articles are displayed in a format according to my
preference as configured through my news reader.
I can read the messages of interest rapidly, in probably 10-15
minutes to scan hundreds of messages. I can rapidly respond to
messages without ever leaving the keyboard, taking me a few
minutes to post possibly dozens of responses.
This is my experience with web forums:
- type in URL or select URL from favorites list
- wait for forum 1 to be loaded
- enter login credentials for forum 1
- leave keyboard to click submit
- wait for credentials to be authenticated and forum to be reloaded
- leave keyboard to click on topic link
- wait for topic to be loaded and displayed in a format of someone
else's preference (if I'm lucky I get to pick the flavor of
chrome by selecting a theme, but the overall presentation is
not under my control)
- leave keyboard to click-drag scroll bar to see thread
- leave keyboard to click response button
- wait for response box to be shown
- type message
- leave keyboard to click submit button
- wait for response to be shown
- leave keyboard to possibly click again to confirm response
- wait for confirmation response
- leave keyboard to possibly dismiss secondary window confirming
posting of response
- wait for thread to redisplay
- leave keyboard to click on next thread
The whole experience is like sitting in a conversational traffic
jam. Click. Wait. Click. Wait. Click. Wait. Type. Click.
Wait. Click. Wait. etc.
The number of responses I can make in the same amount of time is
drastically reduced and I only went through the interaction above
for *one* web forum. If you try to monitor several web forums,
you have to reauthenticate to each one. RSS isn't a solution
either because it is only one-way, there is no standard for
posting back to a thread. RSS only gets you the thread for
consumption.
Add on top of that all the gratuitous flaming, idiocy and image
spamming in web forums and it ceases to become a medium capable of
sustaining any sort of useful discussion, at least in the
demoscene.
