That still doesn't prove that "supporting the sound card makes the
joystick port work". Which sound card were you using? What operating
system?
The Compaq was from 2002; it had XP Home on it. It had integrated audio,
not a real hardware sound card. The games would not detect the joystick
from Windows or DOS. Can't try it now, though. The computer blew three
capacitors.
Decathlon is the only one I can think of specifically engineering to
break keyboards and joysticks :-) Marble Madness, I was disappointed
with; while the game was ported quite well, especially if you run it
on a Tandy (you get 3-voice music), I could never control the marble
very well.
The other posted who responded wanted to know how I killed a keyboard. Try
playing the PC Double Dragon sometime. You inevitably end up pounding the
spacebar really hard, and that's what broke, thereby rendering the keyboard
useless.
I never played Decathlon; I'm kind of afraid to. I have played Summer Games
II, which is sort of similar (but I never lost a joystick with that). And
of Marble Madness, the PC version is actually the only one I've played. The
keyboard controls are of course impossible (probably why it says
"Calibrating Joysticks" when you start it up). The joystick control was ok
once I got used to it.
