Indeedy, I use ADTDos on a regular basis. I have a serial laptlink cable
and an old 486 tosh laptop which runs DOS 6. I run ADTDos on the laptop
and ADT on the Apple // and it copies over at rates of up to 19200 bps.
It's really not that slow (images are 180k iirc).
Something like this would be cool for the PC.
In the meantime, I guess I'll either drop the hard drive in one of my DOS
based Pentiums, or

Another solution is an emulator such as DOSBOX
(dosbox.sourceforge.net). It's not as fun as running on the real

Aww come on! I have a linux box that has dosbox, and plenty of DOS based
486's and Pentiums, but there's no fun in them. Nothing but nothing beats
flicking that massive red chunky power button and listen to the awesome
whir of my real 1982 IBM PC/XT, made just 2 miles from my house, here in
Greenock, Scotland.
I haven't ever used MODE.COM in DOS, apart from noticing it prepare code
pages in later versions of MS DOS as they booted standard configs.
Therefore I'm not familiar with it's use for the parallel/serial port,
maybe I'll look into this if the girlfriend leaves me alone to tinker!
It's about one of the very few DOS commands I never really looked into, as
I mainly used DOS 3.2 and 3.3 in my 'glory' days, I can't remember there
ever being MODE.COM with 3.2, correct me if i'm wrong :)
Anyhoo, Thanks for your suggestions guys. I'll see what transpires after I
get my controller card in the post from the USA.
Cheers,
Ali

None. :-)
However, I think you have to point out the options available. If the OP
wants to simply "git-r-done", the method I described will be the
quickest and most painless .
However............people on this ng don't know me well enough to know
that
I would only consider that option if I was in a hurry. :-)
If I *wasn't* in a hurry, I might try something a bit
more....er.....challenging. Something difficult. Bizarre even.
Like removing the platters from the IDE drive, and placing the magnetic
data on them with tweezers. Nothing like a manual load of DOS to keep
you occupied on a lazy hot summer afternoon.

Actually with all the 100's of drivers that you have to install with
windows for each make of machine I probably would not have thought of
just swapping the drive out from one machine to another. Sometimes you
forget how portable DOS used to be.
