You know, with the PC getting further from its roots in design it may
not be a bad idea for someone to write a program similar to ADTpro
(http://adtpro.sourceforge.net/index.html). It is a windows program
that will allow you, with a minimum of effort, transfer an OS from a
disk image to a Apple ][ that has a disk drive but not software on 5
1/4".
It works by giving you a few lines of code to enter on the empty
machine, which in turn allows it to receive a more complex program
through the serial port, which then inturn allows it to download a
full OS to put on disk.
Yes, this is what laplink/fastlynx does.
Another solution is an emulator such as DOSBOX
(dosbox.sourceforge.net). It's not as fun as running on the real
thing, but it does indeed function for the great majority of DOS
programs, including Windows 3.1.
Problem with this is, which i realized after I posted it, if you have
NOTHING on your HD and no floppy, the PC just keeps saying Insert
disk. There is no basic or m/l monitor to fall back on :(
