Today I pulled the mb out of 5155 and replaced it with the board from a working XT. The computer works!! It looks like everything is in order and the shorted capacitor was guilty. A few notes to whoever should want to take the mb from a 5155:

The board is held in place by two screws and various plastic clips. The first screw is in the lower left corner (if you're facing the rear of the unit) but the second one is below the FDD/HDD units, right over the speaker. You will have to remove both FDD/HDD units to access it. There's an L-shaped piece of metal with 3 screws on the outer side plus (usually) 8 bolts holding the units in place (four on every side) that must be removed. Then the units gently slide out toward the rear of the machine.

This done, the board slides out well enough, with all the clips still on. Fit the new one in and follow the steps in reverse order to reassemble all. The board doesn't power the CRT, the power supply does, directly. Therefore, a direct replacement of a faulty supply with a 5160 one may be impossible. The video card feeds the signal to the CRT through its onboard connector P1, but it's able to drive an external monitor too. A few pictures:

Now I have a mb hangin' around that needs to be fixed, the very moment I understand how to fit a 2-legs in place of a 3-legs one...
